About Tongji University
Tongji University, formerly Tongji German Medical School, was established in 1907. It was given its present name and became a state university in 1927. It was one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China. The university has developed rapidly in all respects over the sixty-five years since the founding of China, especially since the country’s opening-up policy. It is now a comprehensive university with ten major disciplines in sciences, engineering, medicine, humanities, law, economics, management, philosophy, arts and pedagogy with strength in architecture, civil engineering and oceanography.
The university has been one of the most popular universities in the country, attracting a large number of students from all parts of China and all over the world. In particular, it has become the number one choice of those who are pursuing a career in the field of architecture and civil engineering.

International Education
Tongji University establishes jointly Sino-German Colleges, Sino-French Institute, Sino-Italian Campus, Sino-Finnish Centre, Tongji-UNEP Institute, etc.
Tongji University has about 30 colleges, in which there are more than 4800 international students from 100 countries in 2011. The international students study in different programs: undergraduate, graduate, PhD degrees and training programs for degrees or non-degrees.
The “Pre-College School” provides international students with courses prior to their study of specialties, and with Chinese.
Tongji University offers different scholarships: Chinese Government Scholarship, Shanghai Government Scholarship and Tongji University President’s Scholarship to international students, who can apply for them before or after their entrance into Tongji University.
The International Student Office is responsible for recruitment, registration and administration of the international students; and for their scholarship application.
Campus
Tongji University is located in the municipal city of Shanghai and is made up of five campuses namely, covering an area of 2,460,000 m2 , consists of five campuses. The Siping Road Campus is situated on Siping Road; the West Campus on Zhennan Road; the North Campus on the Gonghexing Road; the East Campus on Wudong Road and the Jiading Campus now under construction is located in Shanghai International Automobile City in Anting.
The Huxi Campus of Tongji University is on 500 Zhennan Road, Putuo District.

Living in University
Culture
Tongji University has always been attaching great importance to developing culture, aiming at giving full play to culture in cultivating talents and enhancing cultural cohesion and soft power. Under such circumstances, the 12th Five-year Plan for Cultural Development of Tongji University was formulated and steadfastly followed as the guidance for improving the cultural landscape consisting of four modules full of Tongji characteristics, namely “Guidance of Cultural Direction”, “Cultivation of Cultural Environment”, “Support of Cultural Carrier” and “Spread of Cultural Influence”, which will work as a strong intellectual and cultural support for university’s overall development.
Continuous efforts have been made to enrich and diversify the development of campus culture with cultures at college and disciplinary levels at the core, including consistently improving and expanding the application of online and new media to create a vivid and comprehensive media platform, focusing on research and education about the Tongji history to ensure the passing down of the Tongji spirit from one generation to another. In addition, the essence of traditional Chinese culture will be actively advocated and spread to deepen students’ and teachers’ awareness of and confidence in Chinese culture; the nurturing and practice of the core socialist values will be integrated into the cultural and ethical progress.
Meanwhile, Tongji University spares no efforts to establish a public platform for sharing cultural resources, greatly enriching the cultural and recreational life on campus. The carriers of cultural inheritance and innovation are diversified through further strengthening the development of the national base for culture-oriented quality education in Tongji and the Tongji arts practice base for university students in Shanghai, deepening the influence of fine arts activities on campus, and improving the services and functions of libraries, archives, gallery of Tongji University history and museums. Besides, the Festival of Arts held every year provides the staff and students with a broad arena allowing their exposure to arts and display of talents.
Innovation
Since 2003, Tongji University has been holding both the College Students’ Science and Technology Festival and the May Science and Technology Exhibition every year.
Sports
Sports games of soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, swimming and rock climbing are high popular among faculty and students.
Accommodation
The International Students Service Centers is located on three campuses of Tongji University independently. They are all facilitated with telephone sets, toilets, showers, air-conditioning, public kitchens, classrooms, and business services such as duplication, fax and e-mail sending, typing and air-ticket and train ticket booking are offered.
