Introduction to the Program
The PhD Program at the School of Economics at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) is a a three to four-year postgraduate degree program taught in English.

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was the first Sino-foreign university to open its doors in China. Established in 2004, with the full approval of the Chinese Ministry of Education, we are run by The University of Nottingham with cooperation from Zhejiang Wanli Education Group, a key player in the education sector in China.

PhD Scholarships
The University offers a number of postgraduate scholarships on a competitive basis. These include two full scholarships offered jointly by The University of Nottingham in the UK and UNNC for PhD studies in the fields of international economics and international trade.
You will spend the first year at The University of Nottingham in the UK and the following two years at UNNC. You will be assigned two supervisors, one in the UK and one at UNNC.
You will graduate with a PhD from The University of Nottingham (UK).
The scholarship package includes:
- Full tuition fees (UK and China)
- Monthly stipend of £800, for UK leg
- Monthly stipend of ¥3,000, and free accommodation, in China
- One return air ticket to the UK
- Stipend for Graduate Teaching Assistant
After the award of a scholarship its continuation for subsequent years is subject to satisfying the progression requirements applicable to each year of study.
The scholarship only applies to full time students.
Applicants should have, or expect to have, a good Masters qualification in Economics, equivalent to an overall average of 65% in an ESRC-recognized UK MSc degree. (Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.) The quality of an applicant’s research proposal, and its fit with the Division’s supervisory capacity, are important criteria in assessing applications.
Evidence of relevant personal, professional and educational experience may be taken into consideration.
Students with bachelor’s degree from top quality universities are also welcome to apply.
Students whose first language is not English or entry qualification was not obtained in English are required to provide evidence of proficiency in English. IELTS score is minimum 6.5 with writing no less than 6.0. TOEFL score is also accepted.
Entry Requirements
If you apply to a PhD programme, you will generally need to hold an honours degree at 2:1 level (for applicants graduating from a university in the UK) or above (or international equivalent) in an appropriate subject.
The following will be considered when making an offer:
- academic performance during the undergraduate and postgraduate study
- ranking and fame of the university where the applicant graduates from
- research papers published in international academic journals
- quality of the research proposal
- research potential and attitude
- Important awards granted before
- Very related work experience
- English proficiency

Application Deadline
Applications can be made throughout the year, although you must allow at least one month for processing your application before the commencement of the programme.
Tuition Fees
The tuition fees are RMB90000 each year. The total tuition fee for the 4 year program is 360000 RMB.
Accommodation
The University has several buildings designated for international students, building 11, 18 and 20. All rooms are fully furnished and equipped with air conditioning and a telephone and computer point; enabling students to make and receive telephone calls and access the University’s data network from their bedrooms.
