Introduction to the Program

The PhD Program at the Faculty of Science and Engineering at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) is a a three to four-year postgraduate degree program taught in English.

About UNNC

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was the first Sino-foreign university to open its doors in China. Established in 2004, with the full approval of the Chinese Ministry of Education, we are run by The University of Nottingham with cooperation from Zhejiang Wanli Education Group, a key player in the education sector in China.

The University of Nottingham is in the top one percent of more than 7,500 higher education institutions worldwide and league tables consistently rank the University highly. For more info visit the page here.

About the Program

The PhD programme offers flexible supervision between The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) and The University of Nottingham, UK. Depending on the proposed research, students may be required to spend part of their studies at The University of Nottingham, UK, but students will be registered at UNNC, and graduates will be awarded a University of Nottingham, UK degree which is also recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

The Division carries out research programme on topics including:

  • Green manufacturing in general
  • Study of sustainable manufacturing patterns in regional industries in China
  • Design for green production
  • Optimisation of existing production equipment in terms of resource and energy consumption
  • Knowledge transfer UK-China to support energy efficient fabrication in regional industries in China
  • Remanufacture of dies and moulds (analysis of processing routes and novel business models)
  • Eco-efficient product design
  • Project management in engineering design applications
  • Knowledge transfer engineering applications
  • Alternative energy “sources” and their application (e.g. Sun catcher, sun tracking, novel applications of the Stirling engine)
  • Using natural fibres in engineering applications (fuel, composites)
  • Various topics in the area of soil mechanics
  • Pneumatic engines
  • Developing novel, continuous particle separators for recycling (designing and testing approaches, methods of monitoring and assessing process performance, and modelling approaches such as DEM and CFD)
  • Clean energy technology (include thermochemical energy conversion and pollutant control)
  • Catalytic reaction engineering
  • Bioenergy
  • WEEE recycling
  • Clean coal technology
  • Magnetic resonance imaging
  • Hydrogen production
  • Combustion and gasification modelling
  • Engineering surveying
  • GPS and GNSS
  • Geospatial engineering
  • Development of optimised mooring system for floating offshore wind turbines

Entry Requirements
