Getting a Degree in China in 2024
Like most higher education institutions in the world, Chinese universities award degrees at varying academic levels. There are three main categories of degrees in China: bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. To earn these degrees, you need to study for approximately 2 to 8 years, depending on the level of the degree and field of study.
Non-degree programs such as one-semester and Chinese language courses are also offered in majority of Chinese universities.

Types of Academic Degree Levels in China
Bachelor’s Degree
A bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate program that usually takes four years to complete. Completing a bachelor’s program enables you to work in entry or mid-level management positions. This program is required if you pursue graduate studies. A bachelor’s degree can come in different forms, this include:
– Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
– Bachelor of Science (B.S.)
– Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
– Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS)

Master’s Degree
A master’s degree is a graduate studies program that allows you to specialize in an area of study. These programs can take one to two years to complete. In addition to an undergraduate degree, a master’s degree may require a GPA and a particular score on a graduate entrance exam like the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Completing a master’s degree gives you the opportunity to work in advanced to executive-level positions.

PhD Degree
A doctoral degree otherwise known as Ph.D. is the highest form of degree program that one can complete. Enrollment into a doctoral degree program requires you to hold a master’s degree. Obtaining this type of degree can take four to six years. Ph.D. graduates work as experts in areas of business or research. The most common types of doctoral degrees include:
– Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
– Juris Doctor (J.D.)
– Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)
– Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)
In China, there are many non-degree programs offered in universities and colleges. Examples include Chinese language programs, summer programs and semester programs.
