Common Challenges of International Students & How to Overcome Them
- Language Barrier: One of the first and most noticeable challenges international students face at BCLCC is the language barrier. Even basic tasks—like ordering food, reading signs, or making small talk—can feel intimidating when everything is in Chinese. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, especially outside the classroom where fewer people speak English. But this is also where the learning begins. The best way to overcome this? Use Chinese in real-life situations as much as possible. Start small—greet your dorm mates, ask for prices in shops, or order your favorite meal in Mandarin. Locals appreciate your effort, and every successful interaction builds confidence.
- Cultural Differences: Living in China means stepping into a culture that may feel unfamiliar at first. Social customs, communication styles, and even small daily routines—like carrying hot water bottles or offering direct questions, might catch you off guard. The key to adjusting is staying open-minded and curious. Ask questions, observe how others behave, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Join orientation programs, cultural events, and weekend tours—these are great ways to learn and meet others going through the same experience.
- Academic Style: Studying in China may differ from what you’re used to. Classes might feel more formal, group work more common, and assessments might emphasize memorization—especially in language learning. It can take a while to adapt to new expectations, especially when learning in a second language.Give yourself time to adjust. Participate actively in class, don’t hesitate to ask for help, and take advantage of BCLCC’s resources. Study groups can also make a big difference. Many international students support each other through tough courses, and teachers are usually approachable and willing to provide guidance if you reach out.
- Homesickness: Almost every international student experiences homesickness. There are moments when you’ll miss your family, familiar foods, or even just the feeling of home. Holidays, colder seasons, or quiet weekends can make the distance feel even heavier. The best way to manage homesickness is to stay connected to both worlds. Keep in touch with loved ones through video calls and messages. At the same time, invest in your new environment—join clubs, hang out with classmates, explore Beijing, and create new routines.
