Wang Yan’s Story
Born in a medical family where his parents have been working at frontline of saving people’s lives, Wang Yan, SVP of Cowell Health and CEO of Cowell Technology, has witnessed the company, which built up from scratch, has grown up to be the country’s large-scale drug stores.
Founded in 2017, Cowell Health is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hillhouse Capital Management focusing on the wide health sector. Through rapid mergers and acquisitions, Cowell Health has become one of the largest chain pharmacies in China. Millions of people walk into Cowell’s over 10,000 stores in more than 100 cities across the country every day. 1 in every 18 Chinese is an online user of Cowell’s new retail or online medical service. The company also offers 30-minute delivery and online/offline billing services for medical insurance.
The company has also enabled patients and customers to gain access to health testing, online consultation, chronic disease management and other services on its intelligence platform. These initiatives aim to save patient’s time and make them more convenient in accessing medical service.
All these achievements are inseparable from the efforts made by Wang and his team consisting of hundreds of professionals. They have built a fantastic network connecting thousands of suppliers, hundreds of warehouses, thousands of stores and pharmacists, and millions of customers.
Along with the prosperity of his company, Wang has also witnessed the rapid development of China’s capability in public health. But the more he is devoted to this field, the more he feels there is a large space for him to explore.
Especially when the country has finally contained the novel coronavirus with great sacrifices made by its people, particularly by medical staff, Wang believed he could make a difference to the causes of providing health insurance to more people.
“China’s health spending accounts for about 5% of the gross national product, less than half of the global average and even lower than that of some African countries. China has a large population with extremely limited resources per capita, and the overall efficiency of current healthcare industry is still very low. I could do more to improve the operational efficiency in the industry’s value chain,” he said.
Responding to Challenges
His determination to apply for the distinguished TIEMBA programme was then reinforced by an increasing number of black swan events amid the huge uncertainties of the economic environment. Foreseeing a chance of restructuring in China’s pharmaceutical retail industry in the next five to ten years, he urgently felt he should improve his management wisdom and gain more cutting-edge knowledge in the industry, especially under an international context.
“Maybe it is time for me to slow down and rethink something,” he said.
Casting his eyes on the TIEMBA programme which is renowned for its in-depth integrity in Chinese and Western wisdom, he believes it is the best platform for him to better understand the changing trends in business and economy and will provide insightful solutions to the deep-seated questions that he felt bewilderment in the past years.

Noting that the cooperation with transnational enterprises benefited a lot to his career in terms of decision-making and localization of products, Wang said that the TIEMBA programme will help him grasp the knowledge of better connecting the country’s economic situation with his visions in prospering his company.
“Studying with classmates from diverse cultural backgrounds and from teachers from international perspectives will facilitate me to make more wise and effective decisions,” Wang said.
“New Perspectives and Innovative Solutions”
Just three months of involvement in the programme has already impressed Wang with its strong faculty both from Tsinghua University and INSEAD.
“Professors from the two schools are quite brilliant as they have put a lot of thoughts and researches on critical theories and pass them to students in an easy-to-understand way, which has inspired me for personal growth, career development, and business interpretation,” Wang said.
Wang also was glad to study with 36 students from 17 countries. Despite the fact that the pandemic prevents them from gathering together, they had in-depth interaction with each other. Exchanging ideas with students from different cultural backgrounds and with senior industry experience enabled Wang to gain access to new perspectives and innovative solutions.
“Through the TIEMBA programme, I have been able to think more deeply and clearly about my career and business environments where I am. I have more confidence and strength to face new challenges ahead,” Wang said.
