“HKMU is not just a university; it’s a home away from home.”
This sentiment is widely shared by many ethnic minority students at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU). In this article, we share some stories told by them to give you a better idea of what it’s like to be a student at HKMU.
HKMU is the first University of Applied Sciences in Hong Kong, a city that harmoniously intertwines the dualities of East and West, tradition and modernity, and opportunity and challenge. It offers a variety of programs that cater to the diverse interests and needs of students, whether in arts, business, engineering, languages, or social sciences. Students from different backgrounds and cultures are encouraged to join its community and enrich its learning environment. HKMU also strives to create more study-abroad opportunities for its students by partnering with other higher education institutions worldwide.
So is HKMU the right university for you? Consider what its students have to say about its quality education, supportive environment, and global exposure… and how HKMU became their home away from home.
Academic Diversity and Innovation
Whether you want to pursue a traditional discipline or a cutting-edge field, HKMU offers a large variety of programs to cater to different needs and preferences. You can learn the knowledge and skills needed to succeed not only through traditional classroom teaching, but also through practical real-life experiences.
For example, Peralta Jasmine Montanano, a Bachelor of Education student, was attracted by the comprehensive and practical nature of her program. She said:
“The Skills in Teaching English course allows students to hone their pedagogical skills in teaching a language. More importantly, it involves a teaching practicum in a primary school, one of my most insightful and unforgettable experiences to date. It provided me with hands-on opportunities to teach classes and immerse myself in day-to-day school operations.”
Global Exposure and Cultural Diversity
HKMU students also have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and enrich their learning experience through global exposure. HKMU offers various exchange programs, study tours, and service-learning projects that allow you to travel to different countries and regions, learn from different cultures and perspectives, and contribute to the global community.
For instance, Miranda Serene Angelie Flores, a Professional Accounting student, participated in the HKMU A-Team Student Development program, which gave her access to workshops, talks, and contests with prominent business leaders and students from other universities. She said:
“The comprehensive program grooms participants to become future business leaders. It showed us how to sharpen our competitive edge and encouraged us to participate in workshops to enhance specific skills. We attended talks by prominent business leaders and entered inter-university contests.”
Another example is Afsa, an HKMU Ethnic Minority Student Award recipient who was born and raised by Pakistani parents in Hong Kong. She has been actively helping students with varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds integrate into the school and Hong Kong society. She said:
“I was the chairperson of a student society at university called ‘Enactus’ in my second year. I invited ethnic minority and mainland students to join us. We organized activities, had gatherings, studied together at school, and explored different places in Hong Kong. We have learned each other’s cultures and constraints and become good friends. Mainland students are diligent. I have been influenced by them to study harder and got a better GPA.”
In her final year project, Afsa and her teammates proposed to create a mobile application to cater to the dietary needs of Muslims. She said:
“We wish to make it convenient for them to find suitable restaurants in Hong Kong. We are exploring launching the app in reality. I will continue to facilitate minorities’ integration into the community.”
Career Development and Alumni Network
HKMU students also benefit from the university’s strong career development and alumni network. HKMU provides students with various resources and support to help them prepare for their future careers, such as career guidance, internship opportunities, mentorship programs, and career expos. HKMU also has a large and active alumni network that offers students access to a community of accomplished graduates who can offer advice, connections, and opportunities in both local and international markets. For example:
Global Journey
Naila Mo, a native-born Pakistani living in Hong Kong, speaks fluent Cantonese and has always been eager to explore the world. At HKMU, she participated in exchange programs in Christchurch, New Zealand, and Vancouver, Canada, expanding her horizons significantly.
In New Zealand, she studied sustainable development at Lincoln University and developed a marketing strategy for a local cookie brand. She said:
“It was fascinating to develop a marketing strategy for a brand for the first time, and I learned a lot about marketing principles.”
In Vancouver, Naila took a clinical medical research course at the University of British Columbia, shadowing doctors and assisting in cancer research. She said:
“The trip to Vancouver deepened my interest in medical research, and I plan to pursue a master’s degree in biomedical or health sciences after graduation.”
Reflecting on her time at HKMU, Naila shared:
“Teachers not only cared about my academic needs but also encouraged me to serve as a student ambassador to promote HKMU at public events. I hope to attract students from different ethnic backgrounds to join the HKMU family.”
