Career Path
Could you describe your roles and responsibilities during your time at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Mauritius?
I began my career as an Assistant Administrative Manager and later became the Administrative Manager at the Chinese Embassy. One of my primary roles was to facilitate diplomatic communications between the Embassy and various Ministries in Mauritius. I was also responsible for organizing major diplomatic and cultural events that welcomed senior ministers, high dignitaries, and diplomats based in Mauritius. One of the most enriching experiences I had at the Embassy was during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Mauritius in 2018. I had the honor of collaborating with other Chinese diplomats to ensure the success of this high-level diplomatic visit. This experience stands out as one of my greatest achievements as a young professional.
What prompted your transition from the Embassy to your current position at the Economic Development Board Representative Office?
As a Mauritian citizen, I aspired to serve my country and leverage my experience to deepen the relations between Mauritius and China. Additionally, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between Mauritius and China in October 2019—the first of its kind between China and an African country—presented a unique opportunity. The transition to my current role was a natural progression.I began my tenure at the Economic Development Board of Mauritius as the China Desk Officer, where I liaised with public and private stakeholders to facilitate investment and trade. By the end of 2023, I was appointed Chief Representative of the Mauritius Economic Development Board Representative Office in Shanghai to lead the economic development efforts of Mauritius in China.

My education at XJTLU provided a solid foundation for interpersonal interactions and helped me develop the art of engaging with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. This development, coupled with international exchanges, is crucial for roles in diplomacy and economic development. The university’s emphasis on practical learning and exposure to real-world scenarios equipped me with the skills needed to navigate complex international landscapes.
Are there specific skills or knowledge gained at XJTLU that have been particularly valuable in your career?
The critical thinking, problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication skills I gained at XJTLU have been particularly valuable in my career. These skills are essential in any field and are indispensable for career advancement. Additionally, the hands-on experience with engineering projects at XJTLU provided me with a technical perspective that has been beneficial in understanding and addressing the infrastructural and developmental needs of my country in the international arena.
Advice for Current Students
What advice would you give to current students at XJTLU who aspire to pursue a career similar to yours?
I would advise students to embrace international opportunities, develop strong communication skills, and be open to diverse career paths that leverage their technical education. A degree is a vehicle that can lead to various pathways; do not restrict yourself to a single career track. Engage in extracurricular activities and internships that provide exposure to different cultures and professional environments. Networking and building relationships with mentors and peers can also significantly enhance your career prospects.
What are your future career aspirations or goals? Do you see yourself continuing to bridge connections between Mauritius and China in your career?
I aim to continue strengthening the economic and diplomatic ties between Mauritius and China, aspiring to take on higher leadership roles in international economic development.
