When applying to university in China, you might have a lot of questions to ask the university. Whether you want to ask about scholarships or check your application status, being able to contact Chinese universities is a top concern for international students. But many students find it difficult or impossible to get in touch with these universities.
How can you contact Chinese universities? Email, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram are actually not common ways to get in touch with Chinese universities. WeChat and live events are much better ways. Here are some tips and explanations if you want to get in touch!
Can I Email/WhatsApp Chinese Universities?
Because WhatsApp is a restricted app in China, Chinese universities don’t have official WhatsApp numbers to talk to students. You won’t be able to talk to an official representative on WhatsApp.
Most Chinese universities will have an email account listed on their website. However, some students still experience difficulty using email because…
- Some Chinese universities do not update the English-language version of their website very often, and the email may be out of date
- There might not be an English-speaking staff member checking emails
- The person checking the email is actually not authorized/able to answer your question
In Chinese universities, each department has their specific responsibilities. If you don’t know the proper email of your exact department or specific professor, it will be more difficult to get your questions answered.
Some Chinese universities that are easy to contact on email include…
- Top universities like Tsinghua, Zhejiang University, and Fudan
- International universities like NYU Shanghai, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, University of Nottingham Ningbo China, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
- Our partner universities if you apply with us
The most difficult Chinese universities to contact on email include:
- University of Ningbo, Tianjin University, Beijing Language and Culture College
- Universities in small cities
- Universities in cities where there is a Covid lockdown (no one is in the office)
Contacting Chinese Universities on WeChat
One of the best ways to contact Chinese university officials and staff is on WeChat. WeChat is the #1 most used ‘superapp’ in China, and all universities will have a WeChat account. On their WeChat account, they will share articles with relevant information that may even include an email address in them.
Some larger universities have multiple accounts for different schools and departments, such as their business school or history department.
Some smaller universities with small international student populations may only publish WeChat articles in Chinese. Luckily, WeChat has a fairly good translation function that can help translate articles into English or your native language.
The best way is to have direct contact with an admissions officer or professor at the Chinese university. Without knowing them directly, this is very hard for students outside of China or with limited language ability…but at China Admissions, we have contact with many Chinese university officials!
