Chinese universities have secured all the top five places in the Times Higher Education (THE)’s 2021 Emerging Economies University Rankings. China is the first country/region to achieve such an accomplishment.
Ranking 1st is Tsinghua University, which has retained its position for three consecutive years. Tsinghua is followed by Peking University (2), Zhejiang University (3), Fudan University (4) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (5). The University of Science and Technology of China (7) and Nanjing University (9) also made it to the top 10.
China also broke records with 12 of its universities making it to the top 20. This includes Southern University of Science and Technology (14th), which climbed 16 places from its ranking last year and Beijing Normal University (17th) and Tongji University (20th), both newly joining the top 20.
Universities under emerging economies have high and rapid improvement rate compared to other universities in the world. With numerous Chinese universities seen in the rankings, this means that China is leading the way.
“The result of the competitive THE rankings is a testament to the success of China’s investment in its higher education sector”, said THE’s Chief Knowledge Officer Phil Baty.
For 2021, 91 universities from China qualified for the 2021 Emerging Economies University Rankings.
