Career Tips: How to Stand Out

You’ve probably come across countless career tips on how to stand out as an applicant, but the truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. There are many reasons why you may not be getting noticed—sometimes they’re looking for something specific, or perhaps there’s another candidate who fits their immediate need. But that doesn’t mean you’re not a strong contender. Here’s how you can improve and enhance your chances:

  • CV/Resume: Keep it concise and focused. Avoid unnecessary details and make sure it’s direct, clean, and free from spelling or grammar errors. Highlight your accomplishments rather than listing out responsibilities, and be honest about your experiences. A well-structured, error-free CV will make a solid first impression.
  • Company Research: Before applying, spend time learning about the company and understanding what they’re looking for. This will help you tailor your cover letter and demonstrate that you’re aligned with their goals. If the role isn’t the right fit for you, don’t waste your time—there are plenty of other companies seeking talent like yours.
  • Cover Letter: Keep your cover letter concise and to the point. Avoid overly formal or flowery language, and think from the recruiter’s perspective—they are reviewing hundreds of applicants, so help them get to know you quickly. Your letter should be short but compelling, giving them a clear idea of who you are and what you can bring to the table.
  • Interviews: Be punctual—arrive 10 minutes early to avoid any last-minute hiccups. Show confidence, be concise in your answers, and focus on being straightforward. When given the chance to ask questions, use it wisely. Asking thoughtful questions shows interest and helps you gain clarity about the role. Remember, interviews are a two-way street, they need your skills just as much as you need the job.
  • Rejections: Don’t get discouraged by rejections. Take each one as an opportunity to reflect and improve. Rejection might simply mean that the role wasn’t right for you, and it could be saving you from something that isn’t aligned with your goals. Track the companies you’ve applied to, their responses, and any feedback you receive so you can learn and improve as you go.

In short, stand out by being prepared, concise, and confident. Each rejection is a learning experience, and every interview is an opportunity to showcase your value. Stay proactive, keep improving, and the right opportunity will come.

This month, we feature Felicia Amuntai, an international student at XJTLU pursuing a BSc in Information Management and Information Systems (IMIS). With a passion for both business and coding, Felicia chose this unique program that blends technology with business. “This programme helps me grow both my technical skills and business acumen,” she says.

A recipient of the Academic Merit Scholarship, Felicia attributes her success to seeking guidance from professors, engaging in study groups, and embracing collaborative learning. The scholarship motivated her to push her academic boundaries even further.

As an international student from Indonesia, Felicia faced challenges but turned them into opportunities for growth. Her advice: get involved, seek support, and pursue hands-on experiences through internships and projects.
