We extend our warmest greetings as we join the people of China in celebrating the 75th Chinese National Day and the much-anticipated Golden Week. 

China’s National Day, commemorating the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1st, 1949, marks the grand inauguration of the Golden Week – a week-long national holiday. Since its establishment in May 1999, this week has become a cherished time for the Chinese people, merging patriotism and economic vitality. 

Chinese National Day is an annual celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The legal holiday for National Day spans three days, conveniently aligned with weekends, granting citizens a delightful 7-day vacation from October 1st to 7th. This makes it one of the longest public holidays in China, aside from the Spring Festival. With its pleasant autumn weather, this period becomes a prime time for travel, attracting hordes of Chinese travelers eager to explore their own country. However, it also leads to crowded tourist sites, scarce train tickets, expensive flights, and limited hotel availability.

The celebrations during China’s National Day are marked by grand official ceremonies, including the awe-inspiring military review on Tiananmen Square, spectacular parades, dazzling firework displays, and reflective TV programs that review the year’s highlights.

What is Golden Week?

Golden Week is not just a holiday, it’s a phenomenon. It’s a time when hundreds of millions of Chinese people embark on journeys, explore their homeland, and celebrate their rich culture and heritage. Even in the face of the pandemic, with travel restrictions in place, China recorded an astounding 637 million domestic travelers during the 2020 Golden Week. This holiday is synonymous with a surge in shopping and tourism activities among residents.

What Happens During Golden Week?

Despite the availability of international travel options, many Chinese residents have opted to stay within the country during this holiday period. The reasons vary, from personal preferences to the complexities and costs associated with international travel. As a result, domestic travel has experienced a resurgence.

Residents now choose to explore different provinces, immersing themselves in the diverse landscapes and cultural experiences the country has to offer. Northwestern China’s captivating autumn scenery and the pleasant climate of the south have emerged as favorite destinations among travelers.
