Initially established in 1989 by the Hong Kong SAR Government as the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong, HKMU changed its name in 2021 to accurately reflect its close ties with the wider community, with a clear focus on serving the practical and social needs of Hong Kong and the region in its teaching and research. These days, the university houses seven schools offering over 160 academic programmes and seven institutes with millions in research funding.
With over 10,000 students enrolled in full-time programmes, HKMU ranks sixth among local universities for the number of full-time undergraduate students, making it one of the most prominent knowledge hubs for students locally and worldwide.
Campus and Facilities
Located in the city centre, HKMU campuses are housed in a modern, well-equipped complex offering state-of- the-art facilities for students and faculty on the area of over 75000 square meters.
The university’s facilities include:
Libraries, Auditorium, Multipurpose Halls, Clinical Nursing Education Centre, Child Development Centre, Sports and Wellness Centre, Computer Centre, lecture theaters, classrooms and tutorial rooms, academic concourse and various laboratories (including Physiotherapy laboratories, Science laboratories, Multimedia laboratory, Testing and Certification laboratories and Creative Arts studios and laboratories, etc.)
Study Programmes
HKMU’s signature programmes include Creative Arts, Testing and Certification, Physiotherapy, Environmental Studies, Psychology, Corporate Governance and Hospitality Management, etc.
The four Schools offer more than 40 full-time undergraduate programmes for international students in 11 fields of study, and students can choose how they want to further their education.

The Admission Process
Applications for HKMU undergraduate programmes (2025 A.Y. intake) should be submitted through the online system on or before 31 May 2025 at 23:59 Hong Kong time (GMT +8 hours).
Applicants should expect an admission interview, depending on the programme of choice.
